With deep sorrow and regret that we announce the passing of Fe Basa Mayor (of Naujan) in Manila last month.  We extend our deepest sympathy and sincere condolences to her children, Corina, and Orlando  Mayor and also in memory of their late brother, Florante.   Let us offer prayers for the repose of her soul and may her children find comfort in this difficult time thru good memories that she had shared with them.

Hello to everyone!

My father, the late Severino N. Luna, (was known as Major Luna in Barrio Luna, Bongabong) wrote a book about the Mangyans..... "Born Primitive in the Philippines"; available at amazon.com. As children, my late Dad brought us to Barrio Luna after school was out to be with the "farmers" to appreciate, while learning, the hardships of growing the food we ate. It was during those times that we met a Mangyan, Bag-eta Bie. My Dad adopted him into our family. Eventually, writing a book about the Mangyans. Later on in life, my husband, an MD, and I went back to Bongabong and also to Barrio Luna to provide medical care to the tenants and other people from different barrios. Our stay was brief as we were needed in Mtn. Province to serve the clinics there. Nice to be a guest here. Thank you.

Rory called me up last night here in CT to ask help in the translation and I came up with this instant obra. I hope we have somehow made a credible English version.

MY COUNTRY, THE PHILIPPINES

The Philippines, my beloved country,
Golden land of colorful flowers, verdant hills and fertile valleys,
Fate showered her with love, sweetness and beauty.
And because of these loveliness and charm,
Foreign invaders were enamored and lured to come,
But what have they done to my dear native land?
They captured her, and into the dungeon
Of sorrow and pain, they cast her down.

Even the birds, carefree in the air as they fly,
Cage them and you will hear their soulful cry,
How much more for a country so endowed with such great bounty,
Should she not crave to break the chain to set herself free?

Philippines, my beloved,
Cradle of my tears and sorrow,
It is my fervent wish and desire

Hi Juliet,
I wish to share this English translation of Ang Bayan Kong Pilipinas which will be rendered by our kababayan Abel Angara at the Multi-Cultural Program for Senior Citizens in New Jersey on Feb. 8. His wife, Rory Adeva Angara will accompany him on the piano while he sings the original tagalog version. She will also play the background music (Bayan kong Pilipinas) while Abel recites the translation in English after the song.

OMG!! Pero feel ko talaga.

RE: Art's Concern - Is Mindoro Nickel Project Safe or Unsafe?

As I understand it, there would be no blasting.  The proposed mining method is shallow surface mining or excavating commonly known as an "open-pit" type operation.  It's not a tunnel or an underground mining type operation.  This will only involve removal of the uppermost 4-10 meters of the soil surface. The plan is to mine 1 square kilometers per year and as soon as a block is mined, it will be rehabilitated and re-vegetated simultaneously with the preparation of the next block for mining. Intex gave assurances that to avoid spillage of potentially harmful materials to the waterways, safety measures would be put in placed before the mining operations begin. Transport of ore from the mine site to the processing plant was also given a study. It would involve minimal handling and most likely a conveyor would be used as this appears to be environmentally friendly method of transportation. The solid residue or by-product, that has the texture of toothpaste, would be neutralized and treated before storing it for use on ammonium sulfate fertilizer plant and electronic batteries plant that are also being proposed.

So, it seems like Intex has been addressing Safety and environmental impact properly and demonstrated their willingness to continue an open dialogue to address any additional concerns from the local people. So, I don’t understand your previous post of May 9, 2009, where you stated the “destruction of the watershed, pollution of water sources, chemical tailings effects on fisheries, and acid leakage at processing sites” as the negative effects of the proposed mining project. I’m not sure where you got your information from. Were you thinking of the mining companies of the early years in the Philippines like Black Mountain, Lepanto, Philex, etc? The proposed Mindoro nickel mining project is no comparison to the mining operations of yesteryears where the top most company objective was neither safety nor the environment. The reality of it is Intex as a European company has vast resources and cannot afford to spend the time and money that they already have expended if they, as a responsible company, did not foresee the ramifications of operating in an unsafely manner and without regards to the environment.

To fellow Mindoreños,

We won in the first round of fight against large scale mining of Intex Resources in our beloved island of Mindoro. SEc. Atienza issued Special Order giving temporary revocation of Intex ECC. But the battle is far from over. We still need your prayers and support to totally knock out Intex Resource.....out of the island. Through this letter, please accept our sincere gratitude to all you who prayed for the DENR 25 (Hunger strikers) to witstand the day to day life of being Hunger strikers for the protection of our enviroment. Special thanks also to Tito Art Catapang who always keep in touch with us thru the Cybermovement to Stop Mindoro Nickle Project, giving us moral support and necessary inputs to win. And of course Calapeños USA Intl thru my classmate Paz Iturralde.Tita Juliet, salamat po sa lahat lahat lalo na space for anti-mining  in your website.

Re:Art'sOPINION on Foreign Investor's motives

Hi Dan,as you suggested I went to the Intex website to "seek the facts..."After going through the Mindoro Nickel Project description, I went to Investor Relations -Presentations-ITX June 2009 presented by Erlend Grimstad,CEO.

On pg 17- 2009-Milestones,
Intex claimed" EIA completed-NOT SO
The DENR EIA Review Committee voted for denial of the ECC because the EIA was not complete as reported in the Enquirer.

same page-"Public consultation for ECC completed- NOT SO
Sec. Atienza temporarily revoked the ECC
because this is not true.

On page 18-Social Acceptability
On 4th bullet, Intex reported-" significant increase in support over last year"-NOT SO
In May 2009, more than 10,000 anti-mining stopped the Intex press release in both Mindoros.

What I did not see is any discussion on the watershed location of the mining and the consequential effect on the downstream lives and livelihood when the heavy rain comes.

I have not made any assumption on Intex motives. I just look at what they have done so far.

Looks like IT IS NOT SAFE. Dan, with your background, I think you will find the right cause.

Re: Art's OPINION on Foreign Investors motives

Art, unless you have evidence or proof of the "un-truths" I don't think you can assume that Intex motive is just for monetary gain.  The Philippines has laws that have to be followed and complied with before any foreign investors can operate in the country.  Now, if you're inferring that we can't trust our government officials and our laws, that's a whole different story.  The latest decision from DENR Secretary Lito Atienza where he called for the creation of an "independent, impartial investigating" group which will include civil society groups and representatives of the indigenous communities of Mindoro to examine the serious allegations of the protestors, that should have been done in the beginning.  However, he never mentioned that the government will hire mining and exploration experts, which I think is necessary to make this an impartial and non-political investigation.

I don't favor any foreign investors whatsoever.  I do have a technical degree and more than 35 years experience in engineering design, manufacturing and project management in California.  However, if you expect me as a Mindoreno to symphatize with your cause, I can't just do that without finding the facts for myself and understand what the issue really is.

RE: DAN NABLE'S REJOINDER ON INTEX

I visited the Intex website. I gained some information and at the same time noted un-truths. This is to be expected because Intex is going to mine in Mindoro for profit like multinational corporations do.

Like  anything that we read, we need to be aware of the motivation of the presenter. As was said, the devil can quote the Bible to its own purpose. As concerned Mindorenos, it is our duty to  analyze the implications of what is being proposed. We also need to look at past experience for knowledge on what to expect with this foreign exploiter of our province' resources.

Like, if we are about to do something exciting and climactic, we first need to ask-IS IT SAFE?

Here's the link to Intex Resources website http://www.intexresources.com/section.cfm?path=3,6.  It provides a comprehensive summary of the proposed Mindoro Nickel Project's mining and processing operations including it's economic impact to Mindoro.  I think as concerned Mindorenos it's important for each of us to seek and understand the facts from both sides and set aside for a moment all our emotional and political feelings that seem to overcome most of us in this forum.

Re:Danny Cueto's Message

The last I heard about Noli is he was at the Pacquiao-Cotto fest.

He is from Pola.

He appears to be MIA in the Intex case.Pola is the site where the High Pressure Acid Leaching(HPAL) plant will be located as well the a large portion of the humongous  above- ground conveyor tubes delivering the nickel ore from the backbone mountains of Mindoro to the coastal massive HPAL conversion plant. His town is also the site of the pier where large cargo ships will be docked to deliver nickel to users.

Noli is a heartbeat away from becoming President until June 30 2010. Would he do something to cause GMA a heart attack?Yeah?Nah?

The "palabas "mode in our culture may justify  the need for the hunger strike. We could have gone to Court or to the Ombudsman for redress of our grievance. But these venues are also controlled by GMA.

We can cry and pray, not necessarily in that order.

Dear writer,

In reading the news about the above subject, i am just wondering that in the entire writeup there was no mention about the dear old "kabayan"  Vice President Noli de Castro (the supposed son of Oriental Mindoro).

The person who issued the certificate is from the national govt, wouldn't it logical that the person who holds the second highest office knows about it and perhaps be in the best position to deal with it?

And maybe (just maybe), the hunger strike is not even required.

PS. Iam also a concerned mindorenio.

To all our Kababayans, Let us continue to pray for our fellow Filipinos who were victims of the thypoon "Ondoy", hoping that they pull through after this saddened tragedy.  We all know that PRAYER is the most powerful of all.  All the material things that were wiped out can be replaced.  Life matters most. It is hard to accept sometimes, why things like this happens, but God knows & we all know there is a reason for everything.  GOD BLESS EVERYONE & LET US NOT FORGET, HE is in control. "LIFE IS SHORT, ALWAYS DO THE RIGHT THING EVEN IF NO ONE IS WATCHING".  Thanks to all.  Maraming Salamat.

I am not a native Mindorena but consider myself as one; my family moved to Calapan in 1966 and stayed there till 1976; I'm a 1969 HIA graduate and remember Mr. Medina as one of my teachers, Susan was my classmate and Nimfa was 2-3 years ahead of us ( I'm not sure); as a fellow HIA grad and an RN colleague, I am so proud of her!!! To the Medina Family, please accept my condolences; My sister, Susan went to HIA with Terry Samala-- my condolence to the Samala Family; I remember being in a play with Charo Santos ( proud of her for being Pres. of TV network); Of course, I didn't recognize HIA during my last visit in 2001 wherein I saw some of my HIA classmates-- Emily Bunag-Kazira, Neneng Gempes, Armilyn Evora, Laureta Mendoza, etc. ( sorry amigas, can't recall your married last names), Jimmy Concepcion, Ben Castillo, Efren Castillo, etc. Can you imagine seeing your HS classmates after 30 years? I left the Phil. in 1976 and that was the first time I revisited Calapan; I wanted so much to revisit our previous house in Calero but the current owner was out of town; maybe next time..  I really enjoyed the web site; you've done an amazing job!!! I am looking for another friend from Calapan who was also my classmate in UST- College of Nursing 1974, her name is Loida Chua; I believe, she is a OMHS 1969 grad; no one has heard from her; hopefully, she has heard about this web site or someone knows her and hopefully will pass this message to her.  Thank you...

Mining Issue Update

Pres Macapagal, Occidental Mindoro Congresswoman Villarosa and Pola Mayor Aranas are for the Intex mining to continue.Land Owners, whose parcels are involved in the mining activities and expects to be paid handsomely, are for the mining to go on.Employees, present and future, and other money recepients from the mining activities will be in favor of the mining.

The Mindorenos who will suffer the the negative effects of mining are opposed to the nickel mining. Those negative effects are:

destruction of the watershed
pollution of water sources
chemical tailings effects on fisheries
Acid leakage at processing sites

Now the fight is on between fear and greed.

The Intex executive from Norway bets that they will prevail because " the Philippines is the Philippines"

Hello!  This is Tess Cuasay, eldest daughter of Billy & Luz (Abadejos) Cuasay.  I would consider it a huge favor (and my big delight) for my kababayans residing in Germany to email me with insider tips on how to travel in Germany on a shoestring, college student budget.  My daughter Sam is doing a Study Abroad Program this summer in Prague and would like to go around some European cities during and after her studies.... Ate Marilyn (Gutierrez), Christian Icalina, Debbie Infantado (we were in the Sound of Music together;  you were a wee 'un then):  I'd love to hear from you!

To our neighbors, the Samalas:  Aida, Edna, Boy, and Terry-

I was very saddened to hear of Tia Nene's passing.  I remember her well- how regal and composed she held herself, and yet always with a ready smile for us pesky kids next door.  And I remember Tio Enteng- how generous he was, always leaving the door open so we could watch your TV set from our window...  I will always remember you all fondly.

My parents and my brothers and sisters all wish to extend their sincerest condolences.

MINDORO AS WE KNOW IT

In the U.S., the Environmental Protection Agency has stopped the scraping of mountain tops because the sludged resulting flows down to the rivers and valleys below.

In the Philippines, The DENR allows loggers and miners to scrape the mountain tops- MT Baco and Mt Halcon in Mindoro.

To preserve Mindoro, as we know it, it is suggested that the Sangguniang- Panlalawigan enact resolutions to protect the mountain ridges not only for Ecotourism but for the protection of the surrounging towns like Victoria, Naujan , Baco, Calapan, Socorro and others.

Balik Mindoro 2009

Mga karanasan, kay sarap i-k’wento
Mga kababayang mga Mindoreno,
Buhat California, New York at Chicago,
Nag excursion kayo pabalik Mindoro.

Mabuhay! Mabuhay!

Hello Kababayans,
I have a question to all those that frequently travel from the US to Pinas and back.  Can we transport food from Pinas to the US?
If so, what kind of food? how is it packed? May requirements ba?
I am asking, because I am planning to visit and take home some pastries with me when I come back to the US.

inspired by the theme: Saan ka man sa mundo, balik mindoro.
i wrote this song for all mindorenos out there.. the title itself reminds us that, gaano man kalayo ang ating narating, iisang karanasan pa rin ang ating babalikan, at yun ay ang mga araw sa sarili nating bayan.

SAAN KA MAN SA MUNDO

Words and Music by: Louie M. Dalisay

Barcenaga, Naujan, Oriental Mindoro

SAAN KA MAN SA MUNDO… BALIK MINDORO

KUMUSTA NA MGA KAIBIGAN?

KAY TAGAL NA RIN NATIN DI NAGKITA

NAKAKAMISS ANG PANAHONG LUMIPAS

MARAMING KWENTOHAN DIN ANG ATING PINALAMPAS

KAYA NGAYON, BALIKAN NATIN,

SARIWAIN ANG KAHAPON

SAAN KA MAN SA MUNDO

MAGKIKITA MULI TAYO…

SAAN KA MAN SA MUNDO,

MANANATILI KA SA PUSO

DAHIL ANG NGITI NG TUNAY NA KAIBIGAN

AT KALINGA NG TUNAY MONG KABABAYAN

SADYA NAMANG NAIIBA

ITO’Y ISANG PAANYAYA

SA MASAYANG PAGKIKITA

IPAGPAPALIT PA BA ANG LUNTIANG PALAYAN

ANG MAYAMANG KARAGATAN, NA AKING KINALAKHAN

MALILIMUTAN BA NAMAN ANG HIMIG NG KALIKASAN

SA BUNDOK AT KAPATAGAN NA ATING KINAGISNAN

ANG PAYAPANG DAIGDIG SA PUSO NG KABUKIRAN

ANO PA ANG HINIHINTAY

MAGKAPIT KAPIT NA NG KAMAY

TAYO AY MAGPIPYESTA

DAHIL MULI NAGSAMA SAMA

BAWAT ISA’Y MAY PASALUBONG

MAKULAY NA KARANASAN

HWAG KA LANG MAHIHIYA,

SIMULAN NA ANG KWENTUHAN!

I want thank all of you for the many notes we received from those who posted in Mindoro USA, as well as the emails we received from the US and from Calapan. The tribute you have written in behalf of our Dad and Mom mean so much, as it allowed us to vicariously relate to your many individual and collective experiences with our parents.  While we are overcome with grief with the lost of Dad and Mom in such a short time interval ( six weeks), we continue to try to find comfort in the fact that they are eternally together.  After 65 years of being married, it would be close to impossible to imagine the two of them not being together.
Our heartfelt appreciation to all for your kind words and for your condolences.

Hi! I was browsing the web when I came across your site and was so glad to see a group of Mindorenos.  I went to Mindoro sometime in the mid-90's for some research.  I'm really happy to see Mayor Melgar of Naujan in your album.  Where is he now? Is he retired from local politics, public life or did he assume a higher position?  He's one of the best leaders your province had.  I would have wanted him to run for governor.  He and the late Mayor Yason of Roxas would have been the perfect team.  I'm sure that what he did for Naujan is something that Oriental Mindoro should have experienced.  Thanks.

Mindoro Mountains

How would you feel if you go home and see the Mindoro mountains in the middle of the island flattened at the top? To validate this
reaction, one may see the flattened mountains top resulting from copper mining in Arizona or other sites that have undergone a similar transformation.

If the nickel  mining is permitted to proceed on the middle mountains of Mindoro, the destruction of the environment is incalculable.Entire mountain tops will be blasted away so that Mindex, the mining company, will scrape, dig and drill to get the nickel ore. Excess debris will be dumped into the surrounding valleys  and lowlands affecting the entire watershed area of Oriental and Occidental MIndoro. Hundred of square kilometers will be leveled leaving polluted rivers and destroyed wild life habitat.

The miners  will propose token mitigation efforts which almost always will not be followed resulting in overflowing of tailings containment lakes or beds. The Department of Natural Resources has a  dismal record of enforcing safety regulations in past mining efforts in Marinduque, Mindanao and the Mountain Provinces.

Sabi nga Give Love on Christmas Day . O siya Merry Christmas at Mabuhay kayong lahat. Peace to you all!

My deepest sympathy to the demise of Ninfa Medina Saunders for the passing of her mother. To Melot Santos for the passing of his Mom (Mrs. Santos, very well known to me being our neighbor in Ibaba for a long time) I don't know if Melot still remembers me and so as Jun.

And also, to the Dimayacyac Family for the passing of Dante.  He was such a nice, funny  and good person.  We sat right  next with each other in high school in our Jr. and Sr.  years. I am so sorry that he has to leave us so early and so as all others from our Batch 67 as I heard.    May they all rest in peace.

This time of year  may not be the good time for our love ones to leave us, but we could only think that they were just summoned back "Home" as their mission or job here on earth has been completed.   Again my deepest sympathy in this time of sorrow.

This message is for the ALBERTO FAMILY,
Arturo, Mael, Nora, and Gabriel of Ilaya. As I looked at this news regarding Gabriel's birthday, I did not recognize Gabby. I had to go back and scrutinize each one. I realized you are all the children of my Ninang Juling and Ninong Alberto. I know there is a younger sister ( she is not in the pictures though) isn't it? I haven't seen you GUYS since I was in high school, your Mom whom I often saw since she was the school's principal and your house was across the high school. I am glad to have seen you thru this website. Please connect by e-mailing me at this address: minervahonkala@yahoo.com or visit my blogspot: www.minervahonkala.blogspot.com
I knew Arthur and Nora followed  your Dad's footsteps, then I knew Mael went to the military, but Gabriel and the younger sister who at this time I cannot recall the name, I did not learn about them from that time on. Now I know, and I am happy to have learned about your family. Please get in touch.

SUBJECT:MINDORO RIGHTS

The latest LGU  action is a letter to stop the mining scoping activities.

If the 2007 flood can attributed to the mining activities, as mentioned in the Victoria resolution, will it not be justified to file for  consequential damages agaisnt the mining companies, both Aglubang and Intex, in the local and provincial courts?

It appears prudent to start making these companies pay for the side effects, livelihood losses and damages, of their mining activities.

The provincial  moratorium ordinance has been in effect since 2002. The mining companies has been continously in violation for so long in disregard of local ordinances.

These mining companies may think that Mindorenos are dumb.

Intex Mining is planning to put their processsing plant and landbased storage plant (imbakan ng mining waste) in Silonay.

Good eveiing to each and every Mindorenos & Mindorenas. I am Vicky from Illinois and Walnut, California. I too consider myself a Mindorena being the former wife of a Mindoreno from Calapan Mindoro. I love that place especially the seafoods and beaches. I've got lots of friends when I was in Calapan but these friends of mine migrated in USA.  We are in Illinois during summer and in California at winter time. Being so friendly I have circle of friends also from these places and Mindorenas are among them.  This website is wonderful, you could connect to old friends in fact, one of my friend told me about this site. I search by state and found some of my friends. I'm so thankful some of my long lost friends from Calapan but now living here are located.  Thank you again !

Dear Juliet,

Hi, I thought you and other Mindoro people would be interested to know that there's a screening of the movie "BRUTUS", a film about two mangyan children, shot in Mindoro. It's going to be in Chicago on OCtober 24 and 26. The film is joining the 44th Chicago International Film Festival. It would be nice if you can feature it in your website so Mindoraonons in Chicago can watch it. Afterall, it concerns your province. There's also a screening in Hawaii this October, but I don't have the details yet.  You can check out my site if you're interested. http://chiquibaylon.net/

On behalf of all the officers and members of the Association of Calapenos-USA International, I would like to extend our gratitude to Juliet and Mindoro USA for the support on our campaign to save a life of a fellow Calapeno- Henry Iguban- 28 years old, and has kidney failure. Henry found us thru this website, and thru this web site, we will endeavor to help him. Talagang this site is not only a venue to connect with each other but something of real worth for our collective well being. Salamat, Juliet.

Salamat po in advance. Life is precious... we can't save every one, but if we can save but one, then we would have discharged our responsibility to our fellowmen well.

Any amount will be greatly appreciated. The need is URGENT. Please email me or call me at 650 2005091. Please let us all be Henry's lifeline. --

Hello Mga Mangyans (I’m one of course),

I’m glad that a site like this brings Mindorenos closer again. Kudos to Juliet A.and family.

Meanwhile, let’s take this further by helping each other to protect our beloved home province. It’s time to give back (suklian) to the good things that Mindoro (your native land) gave you. I’m taking a step ahead of those who need your support. Nevertheless, it’s all up to you.

We should be concerned about the future ecosystem of Mindoro and should wish that its pristine environment is kept as it is. This is an excellent time to support the Mindorenos who are fighting for it.

Environmental damage is inevitable no matter what mining companies and their local lobbyists say otherwise. I read their agenda from http://www.crewdev.com/crew_ar06/revops_mindoro.php and personally do not trust or believe a cent about their plans or claims on how to protect and restore the land they will RAPE. It’s all about GREED. It's all going to be a disaster. Check out the Marinduque mining disaster as reported by the Joint UNEP/OCHA Environment Unit from http://www.reliefweb.int/ocha_ol/programs/response/unep/unep4.html.

Most of you know the politicians and locals who are salivating (and dreaming about $$$$$$$$$$$) on the prospect of mining operations. In their minds, it’s time to get rich or even richer. Most of you also know who are against the operations so please contact them to offer help and support they need if you can. They alone cannot fight huge corporations who have huge budgets for lining local pockets. I’ve heard and seen the letters and articles voicing protests from a large religious group (no surprise there) in Mindoro. Ask them how you can help.

Cheers

The Philippine Daily Inquirer (Internet Edition) showed a brief video of a series of "mysterious" incidents in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro the past few days.  Below is the caption of the video.
Just to let everybody know...

POSSESSED.' Students carry a besieged boy in a public high school in Calapan City in Oriental Mindoro as 'evil spirits' take over his body Friday. Nearby, another 'possessed' pupil is brought to a table as her classmates frantically try to help her. Using his camera phone, teacher Edwin Acedera documents the paranormal attacks that have disrupted classes and instilled fear in the school community.

Dear Fellow Mindorenos,

It is with deep sadness to inform our "kababayan" that Antonia Gozar, wife of the late Ysmael Gozar of Calero, Calapan, Or. Mindoro died on 08/01/08. She was 89 years old when she left this earth to meet with her loving God. Left to cherish her memory are children: Jimmy, Randy, Renato, Fr. Danny Gozar, SJ, Benjamin, Marilou, Ma. Dolores, Bobby and Ted.
The family will receive friends at the Sacred Heart Church & National Shrine corner Kamagong Street, Makati, Philipines. Burial is set on 08/09/08. As she meets the Lord in heaven she will forever be remembered as a loving and caring mother. She will be missed by family and friends. Nakikiramay kami sa iyong pamilya, Ben. She entered the film in the 2008 Cinemalaya Independent film festival and it won 4 awards. You might want to know about it in my website: www.chiquibaylon.net. Go to the archives and read "Watch me, watch me, watch me" and "4 Cinemalaya awards". It has some links to other sites where you can watch videos, and read more info.

Dear Sir/Madam:

I am Henry Iguban, 28 years old and a resident of Bulusan, Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro. I was diagnosed to have end-stage renal disease January of 2006 and right now Im under hemodialysis treatment at the National Kidney & Transplant Institute in QC.

I was already advised to undergo kidney transplant but we can no longer go on with the process due to monetary problems. Our financial status became unstable because I have been under treatment for more than 2 years now. My mother is the sole provider for the whole family and working as an ordinary gov't employee of our Provincial Capitol. We do not have any other source of income. My father can no longer work because of his poor eyesight. But I still want to live longer. I was just starting to build my dreams when I acquired this disease and I believe that I have so much to contribute in the community given the privilege to live longer.

My fellow mindoreno brothers & sisters, I am appealing in behalf of my family that I may be granted of your humble attention.

Very Respectfully,
Henry Iguban

Greetings from St. Augustine Seminary!

Our bishop, Warlito I. Mimo's Acoustic Gospel Concert Tour last April & May and to our Seminary Appeal.  It was indeed a providential and grace-filled undertaking meant for the nurturance of priestly vocations in our local church. For those who would wish to know how you could continually help, you may email us at: sas_friends@yahoo.com or browse our website: www.sasmindoro.org

Come and visit SAS in Suqui, Calapan and  SASMA in Tagaytay when you have your Grand Homecoming in February.

Fr. Carding Salditos forwarded this site to me. I left Bongabong in 1974 when I was 20 and have lived in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada for over 30 years now.  The rest of our family moved here in 1981. I have only been back for a visit twice so it's so nice to read about Mindoro and see pictures of kababayans although I  recognize only a few faces. What an excellent website! I know that I will be spending more nights browsing this page from now on rather than playing my favourite games of Bookworm and Texttwist. There is still so much to see but I have to get some sleep.  Thanks to all who put this together for a job well done.  I hope to get connected with people from Bongabong.

The write up about my Ninang Penelope is awesome. I would still like to add some more information about her that I happen to know. She first taught at Adriatico Elementary School after graduating from high school. I believe she was only about 16 or 17 at the time. She also joined the Operation Brotherhood as a teacher/social worker in Sam Neua, Laos. This was during the early years of the Vietnam war. She was among the last to be evacuated when Pathet Lao communist guerillas over-run that country. Her diary about this episode was published in an international magazine. Her book "Goodbye Vientiane" reveals her experiences in Laos. I just read it myself recently. I hope you guys get to read it too.

We're all very proud of her and her accomplishments. Thank you. I wish everyone well and more power to MindoroUsa.

Hi.I'm an ophthalmologist based in Manila but weekly ( on Sundays and Mondays ) I return to Roxas, Oriental Mindoro, the hometown of my dad.I've been doing this for 1 year. I have to say it is one of the most fulfilling things I've done. I look at private as well as charity cases in my clinic in Bagumbayan. I stumbled upon your website while surfing. It's great to find mindorenos from other countires returning to their roots. I'm writing this e-mail/letter so as to seek help/aid. I would like to help more people in Mindoro ( not only in my municipality ) gain access to cataract surgery. I have a lot of patients who cannot afford the full amount of the operation. I am approaching your group (if maybe) you can help me in gaining some donations to at least shoulder some of the expenses for the operation. I have already made a cataract mission which offered my free services but I would like to make this a year round event so that people don't have to wait for the missions. I'm willing to cut my professional fee to a minimum so that I could decrease the number of people going blind in my province. I have also tied-up with an NGO who are willing to give some supplies for the surgery so that the cost of surgery will go down. But, as I have stated, I still need help.

Hope you can help me in my endeavor. Ronaldo Mathias A. Noche, MDOphthalmologistRoxas District, Oriental Mindoro

Subject: Your Mindoro as You Know It

Dear Mindorenos:

Mindoro, like any other place will change. But it will not change drastically if the MIndoro nickel Mining Project is not allowed to continue. The natural landscape will be scarred, the ecosystem negatively disrupted and the evironment  will be polluted if the Mindoro Nickel Project is allowed.

Is Mindoro in peril? You be the judge- or not !

The pro and con on this important issue is available from these links:
www. intexresources.com

If you are really interested, e-mail me for the complete pdf presentation on the Mindoro Nickel Project.

I was in contact with Nimfa Medina-Saunders before, but we kind of lost touch a while back. I know Connie Lubrica is in New York. Bing Umali-Viegelman, same we lost touch. But I know she's still there in San Jose, CA. I want to hear from Necitas Sales. She's in Norway, last time I heard. God Bless you all.

Subject: Heroes from Mindoro

There are Mindorenos who go against the tide of " Palabas and Pasiklab".They rather give up fame and personal gain for a nobler cause.

Allow me to mention the following:

Mr. Paulo Alveyra

He turn down an offer to teach at the Philipine Military Academy so that he can teach the young Mindorenos at the Oriental Mindoro High School. He gave up prestige and lots of money. How is that for the love of Mindoro youth!

Governor Bart Marasigan

He championed  the 25- year mining moratorium for his love of Mindoro.Instead of following the national Government,  he stood firm on his conviction and his belief that Mindorenos must be protected. One can just imagine what monies and favors that he gave up. There could have been large sums of consultant fees and offers to take care of his forebears if he only relented to the mining pressures.

Please continue this list of heroes by adding someone you know. There's got to be a lot of them out there.

The twin provinces of Mindoro serve as the gateway to world class and frequently visited resorts and nature sites in the Philippines. Boracay is accessible via Port of Batangas to Calapan pier and through Roxas, Oriental Mindoro. Puerto Galera is a few hours away via Port of Batangas and directly to Puerto Galera. Soon, nature's wonders in Palawan - the Tubbataha Reef and Underground River- will be accesible via Port of Batangas, then Abra de Ilog in Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro to Palawan using Roll on-Roll out(RoRo). The February, 2009 reunion of Mindorenos from around the world should "open the gates"of Mindoro to world enthusiasts and tourists visiting the world's best nature sites.

Visit(www.new7wonders.com)and vote for Tubbataha Reef and Underground River in Palawan, Chocolate Hills in Bohol and Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro among the "Wonders of the World."

It's good to see that all Mindorenos from all over the world has this opportunity to be connected with one another. Thank you Juliet and company for doing this.
I was born and bred in Ilaya, Calapan. A graduate of OMHS batch 73. Migrated to Sydney Australia in 1979. Married to Yolilie Reyonda (Naujan).

Just reading the messages in the guest book brings back memories of Santacruzan in Ilaya. (Ching, I still remember you with DodoyGuttierez) leading the Fiesta.

Well I hope I will be able to connect with few people that I know of, particularly the Masilang siblings who are our neighbours in Ilaya.

To all the Mindorenos...best wishes and God's best!!!

Praise God for giving me great courage founding the "INTERFAITH BIBLE READING CENTER (IBRC)" in Bongabong, Oriental Mindoro. Enrollment going on. Reading sessions start on May 4, 2008.

IBRC is recruiting primary sponsors (individual or group) who could spare (kawanggawa) a meager of $50.00 annual support to the center. Bigger share of your sponsorship goes to purchase of Living Bible/Religious Movies and whatever excess will go to snacks serve to participants at the end of every reading/discussion session. Sponsors names and States/Countries of residence will appear year round on the left side corner of the center's office stationery and permanently recorded in the center's archives.

Anybody interested, please express your spiritual intention to willie031641@yahoo.com. Godspeed.

* Readers Group meets every Sunday P.M.
* Read Living Bible enliven by matching dramatic stereo tapes
* Opportunity reading the whole Bible word for word
* Snacks while watching religious movies

Hello fellow Calapenos/Mindorenos.
It's quite a long time since I visited the website. I enjoyed every tidbit of info including the jokes only, Guest book, and "Baka di mo alam".Through all those sites, I have learned how much you all have encompassed the nation.
It is quite an endeavor and I salute the honorary members and officers for job well done through the magnanimous leadership of our Madame President, Juliet.

I would like to extend my apologies to Norman Alday.
Needless to say, "Hello kababayan".
I am currently residing at Honolulu, Hawaii for a long term assignment.

Hi Juliet,

Thanks for your visit to Lola Toyang despite your busy sched, you made the time to see her.  This is very much appreciated.

We were talking to Lola Toyang the other day and she was very happy about your visit and couldn't thank you enough.  The most exciting part was when you handed her your "pa-birthday", she was so thrilled and started counting!! Oh yes, that's lola! at 102 she doesn't get confused of peso figures!!

It can not be better than that! Thank you for making it very memorable for her.

We're praying to God to give you strength and countless blessings.  More power to your good works!

All the best,

Gumagalang, Eileen Aldaba Paglinawan Wood

A Blessed and Peaceful New Year to all our kababayans in North America especially to the officers and members of United Mindoro International,Inc.  Here's something which I believe is worth sharing with you--an opportunity for you to be advocates and nurturers of priestly vocations for our local church in Mindoro.  The Acoustic Gospel Concert of Rev. Fr. Mimo Perez  [who hails from Baco and is now the Spiritual Director of our Theology Seminary in Tagaytay] will definitely push through.  This is meant both as an Easter fellowship activity for Filipinos in the US and a fund campaign in support of seminary formation.  As of this date, the said event will be staged on April 19, 6 pm, at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, Techny, Illinois, and on April 26, 7 pm, at the Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Glassboro, New Jersey.  For more informations, you may contact Weng Cosico (773-4037549) and Jess Deniega (773-4181033) in Chicago and Rev. Fr. Danny Quiray (609-2719154) in NJ.  This same event may also be held in California-- Los Angeles, Lancaster, San Francisco between March 24-April 6 and in New York in the first week of May.  We're still eyeing for kindhearted souls in these areas with whom we could collaborate.  IF YOU'RE WILLING, JUST LET US KNOW!   For LA,  Bishop Oscar Solis, the episcopal vicar for migrants of the Archdiocese,  already expressed his willingness to support the project; in fact, he is offering his office to be the venue for planning and meeting.  For New York, we're counting on the support of United Mindoro International, Inc. and  we're so grateful to Tita Juliet Payabyab for being so accomodating.  Prior to these dates, Fr. Mimo, Fr. RV Villavicencio and myself will celebrate the Holy Eucharist and conduct fund campaigns for the seminary in the parish churches of St. Bridget, Our Lady of Las Vegas and Martin Luther King in Las Vegas on March 16 Palm Sunday and during the Holy Week. For details, you may contact Rev. Fr. Rey Salditos (702-3353205). To all our kababayans,  we appeal for your support!  May God bless you and your families.

My deepest and sincere condolences to the family of Ms. Milagros Cortez, my 4th grade teacher at Hilltop Elementary School in Calapan.  Where I am now and who I am can be partly attributed to where I was years and years ago at the classroom of Ms. Cortez.  It is true that some of the basic values and principles in life are learned from your grade school teachers.
Again, condolences to the Cortez family and to "Tinoy," a childhood friend.

Masagang Bagong Taon sa inyong lahat! Nice to see old friends and relatives in your photo albums. Reminds me of the past years.

O hayan- may showbiz blood tayo ha.
